COVID-19 Policies

Before you board your plane, please check with your airline about their COVID-19 policies.

Hackathon participants are required to follow COVID-19 policies set forth by the event organizers and venues. 

Tech Center events in and outside of Hawaiʻi follow University of Hawaiʻi COVID-19 guidelines, in combination with any other mandates required by local partner institution(s) and businesses.

Lodging info
The Tech Center has reserved a private room for you at the Best Western Plus, which is in proximity to the University of Maryland campus. Your lodging at the Best Western Plus is covered by the Tech Center for the duration of the hackathon (arrival date April 7, departure date April 10). Hackathon participants who stay at a different hotel are not eligible for full or partial reimbursement for their lodging costs and risk forfeiture of their travel award.

Check-in & check-out
Participating students will be able to check in at 4:00pm on April 7. A credit card is required for check-in. Check-out time is at noon (11:00am) on April 10.

Room policies
Participants are responsible for expenses such as incidentals or charges for any damages.

The Best Western Plus follows a strict 100% smoke-free policy. The Tech Center is not responsible for the coverage of fines or fees other than the room rate for the duration of the hackathon event.

University of Maryland Campus

The Best Western Plus College Park Hotel is a 19-minute walk to the hackathon event venue, H.J. Patterson Hall, Room 2124, which also will serve as the location for breakfast and lunch.

Shuttle Service to UMD Campus
Free shuttle service will be provided between the hotel and the event venue. For departure times, please refer to the event schedule. A member of our team will assist with boarding and unboarding procedures.

Airport Transportation 

BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BWI)
Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is located about 24 miles northeast of the University District where the Hackathon hotel and venue are located.

MTA MARC TRAIN
BWI Marshall Airport offers free, frequent, and convenient shuttle service between the MARC/Amtrak station and the BWI Marshall Airport Terminal. At the BWI Marshall Airport terminal, shuttles pick up on the lower level, outside of baggage claim at four designated stops to take you to the rail station.

MARC-Penn-line trains connect BWI airport with the New Carrollton Train Station (Penn-Washington route, 4 stops, $7.00).

Tips for using MTA MARC Trains:

  • You can download CharmPass, MDOT MTA’s mobile transit fare app for Apple and Android devices, and purchase fares directly from your smartphone.
  • You can also purchase tickets from MARC ticket vending machines using Apple Pay® and Google Pay, plus credit and debit options and transit subsidy and benefit programs (select locations accept cash).
  • The New Carrollton Train Station is located around 6 miles from the hotel. From the station, take a local bus (e.g., F6) or ride share (around $20).
  • The MTA MARC trip planner can help you create a transit plan.

RIDE SHARE
Lyft and Uber: App-based ride services pick up and drop off passengers at the terminal curbs on the Upper Level/Departures. Cost for a ride from the airport to the hotel is around $60.

RONALD REAGAN WASHINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DCA)
Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport is located about 14 miles southwest of the University District where the Hackathon hotel and venue are located.

METRORAIL
The DC Metrorail is the cheapest form of transportation from DCA to College Park. There is an elevated Metrorail station connected to the concourse level of Terminals B and C at Reagan National Airport. Take the Yellow Line train (Reagan National Metro stop) to College Park Metro station (15 stops, $3.85).

Tips for using DC Metrorail:

  • You will need exact change if paying in cash.
  • You can also purchase a SmarTrip card online or at any Metrorail station. With a SmarTrip® card, Metrobus transfers are free and Metrobus-to-Metrorail transfers are discounted.
  • The walking distance from the College Park station to the hotel is approximately 29 min.
  • The Metrorail trip planner can help you create a transit plan for any of your DC destinations. 

RIDE SHARE
​​Lyft and Uber: Green flags located outside on the outer terminal curb designate the appropriate pick-up loading zones.

  • Terminal A: Customers can meet their ride on the third (outer) curb.
  • Terminal B/C: Customers can meet their ride on the Baggage Claim (Arrivals) Level-1st Floor on the outer curb.

Cost for a ride from the airport to the hotel can vary widely depending on traffic, from $60-$160.

DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (IAD)
Washington Dulles International Airport is located about 36 miles west of the University District where the Hackathon hotel and venue are located.

EXPRESS BUS/METRORAIL
The Silver Line Express Bus provides a convenient, economical connection between Washington Dulles International Airport and the Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station. The stop for the Silver Line Express Bus is located in front of Door 4 on the Arrivals level. The fare is $5.00 and the trip takes about 15 minutes.

On the Metrorail, take the Gray Line at Wiehle-Reston East Metro, transfer to the Green Line at L’Enfant Plaza (17 stops), and take the Green Line to College Park Metro (11 stops, $3.85).

​​Lyft and Uber: App-based ride pick-ups will be located on the lowest level of the airport.

  • The new curb is located on the ground level outside of Baggage Claim, accessible via Doors 2, 4 or 6.
  • Numbered zones make finding your ride easy
  • Customers will be notified of their pickup location through in-app messaging

Cost for a ride from the airport to the hotel is around $80.
