Moroccan Arabic and Culture Courses

Satisfying the Pre-Departure Moroccan Darija Requirement
Option 1: Flagship Darija Courses
Students who have taken Levels 1, 2, or 3 of the Flagship course, entitled Moroccan Arabic and Culture: A Multimedia Interactive eTextbook with an instructor at their home institutions, during the academic year, satisfy the pre-departure requirement. These students do not need to take the proficiency assessment below. Their home Flagship program will just certify they have completed the course(s).
Option 2: Flagship Familiarization Crash Course
If a student has no prior Darija at the time they are selected for the program, they can still learn enough Moroccan Arabic using the self-paced, technology-based Familiarization course. See details below under “Level 1 Moroccan Arabic and Culture Familiarization: A Multimedia Interactive eTextbook.”
Option 3: Proficiency Assessment/Testing Out
If a student already learned some Darija from other contexts, they will need to take an oral assessment that verifies that they have met the requirement. Depending on the assessment outcome, students will be able to skip through the learning materials altogether or be directed to the relevant units in the Level 1 course to help them learn what they need. Any units that need to be learned must be completed prior to departure to Morocco.
Registration Process
Option 1: Flagship Darija Courses
Step 1 – Authentication: Names and emails of instructors and students who need access to the course are collected and provided to the Tech Center. For an initial request for enrollment, please contact the Tech Center (tech.center@hawaii.edu).

Learning Tip: To ensure retention, it is recommended that students complete daily assignments in a progressive manner and regularly review earlier materials as they advance through the course.
Option 3: Proficiency Assessment/Testing Out
Students who have previously taken any of the levels of the Flagship course entitled Moroccan Arabic Language and Culture or a longer version of it fulfill the requirement and do not need to take the assessment.
