2025 Design Studio
Enhancing articulation

The goal of this professional learning initiative is to foster articulation between Flagship programs through the design of innovative AI-assisted project-based language learning (PBLL) experiences. We encourage partnerships between domestic Flagships, or between domestic Flagships and overseas partners.

This professional learning program consists of two stages, named Foundations and Design Studio:

Foundations
Applicants will learn about essential design features of high-quality PBLL experiences, and basic applications of Generative AI in language teaching and learning.

Design Studio
Guided by the Tech Center team, accepted applicants will engage in a 5-day immersive professional learning experience customized to refine their AI-assisted PBLL designs.

The 2025 Design Studio will take place from May 27-31, 2025, and will integrate the 2025 CALICO (San Diego State University), which has a primary focus on technology and language learning and teaching. This will provide a unique opportunity for participants to enrich their project designs by participating in selected CALICO sessions that align with their project needs, exploring relevant technologies, and interacting with professionals in the field beyond the Tech Center team.

Program at a glance

Foundations

The Foundations stage of this initiative is meant for Design Studio applicants to learn about essential concepts related to PBLL and Generative AI and is relatively flexible because it can be completed at your own pace within an ample time frame. The two components of this stage are a self-paced mini-course on PBLL and a one-hour session on Generative AI.

Envisioning PBLL

The goal of this mini-course is to learn about the essential design features of high-quality PBLL, and to learn how to generate project ideas using the Product Square. This mini-course is a requirement for all applicants. The requirement can be waived for applicants who have already received a badge.

Eligibility: Faculty and staff in The Language Flagship, Project GO, LTC, and DLIFLC programs are eligible to participate.

GenAI Orientation Module

The goal of this 60-minute orientation module is to give participants the opportunity to learn about basic Generative AI concepts and explore some of its potential applications to language teaching and learning. Completion of this module is a requirement to participate in the Design Studio. Participants are also encouraged to attend the Tech Center’s Flagship Exchange Mini-Workshops on AI Use Cases during the Spring 2025 semester.

Key Dates

May 8: GenAI Orientation Module available (60 min, synchronous, online)
May 26: Last day to complete GenAI Orientation Module

Design Studio

The goal of the Design Studio is to refine the proposed project design and integrate the use of Generative AI through consultation with the Tech Center team and the broader language technology community at CALICO. The Design Studio experience will be highly customized to the team participants’ and project needs. During the first two days of the Design Studio (May 27 and 28), participants will work closely with Tech Center faculty to refine project designs, explore possibilities for the integration of Generative AI, and decide on CALICO sessions that have potential to inform project designs. In the next two days (May 29 thru 30), participants will be able to follow their own customized schedule to continue the development of their projects with assistance from Tech Center faculty, and also participate in selected CALICO sessions, the CALICO Technology Showcase, and the LaunchPad competition. On the last day of the Design Studio (May 30), participants will have the opportunity to share their project designs with a selected audience of CALICO participants and receive final feedback on project design and Generative AI integration.

Eligibility

Faculty and staff in Language Flagship programs (domestic or overseas) are eligible for funding. Please note that all participants must be members of a multi-institutional team, according to the guidelines.
