After completion of this workshop, successful participants will be able to describe essential features of high quality PBLL and to generate high-quality ideas for projects using the Product Square, an instructional design tool. Successful participants will be certified with a Tech Center electronic badge (digital credential).
Build fundamental understandings of Project-Based Learning (PBL), develop your conceptualization of PBL, and raise your awareness of essential features of high quality project design. You will also start the discussion with the facilitators and your colleagues about potential project ideas.
Increase your awareness of issues in adapting PBL to the world languages context. Learn why can High Quality PBL can be a powerful framework for projects in world language education. Identify the key characteristics of high quality Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) projects, and some of the potential challenges in the design and implementation of HQPBLL.
Engage in the exploration of project ideas and driving questions for PBLL that fulfill the essential features of PBL through a guided review of a number of sample projects. Learn how to identify project ideas and how to craft a powerful driving question.
Learn how to use the Project Square, a tool designed to help you critique and revise project ideas to ensure that they fulfill the essential features of PBLL, such as authenticity and a public product that meets an identified need.
Learn to anticipate learners’ “Need-to-Knows (NTKs)” using the project you have envisioned. You will learn how NTKs are identified and constructed and how they can frame a project. You will also learn how to manage NTKs throughout a project.

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I at MāNOA
Application is competitive (25 seats)
Open to teachers in The Language Flagship, Project GO, the DOD Language Training Centers, and the DLIFLC.
Pre-requisite: ENVISIONING PBLL WORKSHOP BADGE
Cost: The program will cover Language Flagship teacher participation in full (airfare, lodging, and per diem for meals). PGO, LTC, and DLIFLC teachers should consult with their programs regarding funding opportunities.

At this Intensive Summer Institute, participants will build key knowledge in PBLL teaching practices with friendly support from mentors (Tech Center faculty and Language Flagship program directors) and start planning for implementation. At the end of this component, successful participants will have reached a new milestone that will also be certified by a Tech Center badge and they will be ready to embark on the final part of this journey: project implementation.

During this phase of the program, qualifying participants will receive logistic and pedagogical support from the Tech Center and mentors to make their project a reality. They will also have reached the last milestone of this journey together by participating in a Tech-Center-sponsored event that will showcase project ideas to inspire colleagues to follow on their steps.
