ABSTRACT
The Bronze Horseman is much more than just a statue in the heart of St. Petersburg. At the time of its construction, it was a means for Catherine II to show her legitimacy as ruler and connections to Peter the Great. Since the 18th century, The Bronze Horseman has remained a St. Petersburg cultural icon and is a reminder of Peter’s legacy and the everlasting presence he will have in the city, which is most notably illustrated in Alexander Pushkin’s poem “The Bronze Horseman.”
